VANGUARDS TO OUR SELF RECEPTORS

Found at the ramparts of living cells ,and being also the first contact with surrounding world and cosmos are … membrane ‘Receptors’ . Wonder information sensors cuddling life inside their fortified defenses . Exchange energy , information, and intelligence in codes of sensory inputs . ports only thru these gates . Evolutionary process since unicellular life origin in bacteria ,protozoa etc. has been continuously adding more of these ever adapting and improved versions .

Origin of life itself was a primary event in creation of ‘subject and object’… .The cell wall membrane provided border between animated .. a cradle for future ‘consciousness’ and inanimate hostile surroundings. Breach of barrier meant only destruction and decay to death.

But the same Life process also required a dynamic exchange of energy minima to fight the entropy reality principle. Receptors were initially simple gaps, pores to exchange energy gradients and information. Keeping pace with later ongoing evolution ,these receptors took roles being Vanguards, more proactive ‘Avant-garde’, but always filtering thru the safe life supporting logic.

Passing across multiple times in lipid membrane of cell the protein molecules takes shape of three dimensional structure , which has active bonding sites for ligands.and also central channel created by this protein allows regulated flow of ions across , Ionic gradients are the key to cellular homeostasis .

But all the receptor functions require energy supply .where cash currency used is mostly ATP molecule…another nature miracle protein machine. This machine is almost in proximity of receptor to ensure continued supply of energy resources.

From simple inotropic receptor configurations these diversified into complex metabotropic ones . Combination of these were able to contribute in multicellular life survival and further evolution of organism size and complexity dimensions. Diversification of interdependent tissues, organs also challenged use of receptors for integration of intracellular communications and multitasking.

Voltage gated ion channel phylogeny

Innovation generated by evolution to create neuron was the most complex use of the receptors in gating of information. Specialised requirement for unidirectional flow of information in neural circuits made use of Boolean AND,OR,NOR logics. Receptor grew in even more complexity, and specific membrane receptors became localized in zones of neuron synapses to create magic of affect, perception, and motor responses.

In a way it is only the receptors sitting at the limits of cell membranes, nuclear borders ,intracellular organales, and synapses , which decide the functional codes of life.

Anything and everything about life ,and its continuity pass thru these gates without any exception. Whole spectrum of body physiological systems depend on these vanguards. And now all of health innovations and dominant pharma industry competes for receptor’s favour to treat all pathological needs.

Receptor evolution overview
Voltage gated calcium channel

In context to neuroscience we have in every neuron a plethora of receptors with ranges in structure and functions .These have uniqueness ,parallel development and also some evolutionary sequence traced right from the primitive bacterium genetic pools.

Relevance to neurophysiological demands are mostly guided by Dopaminergic , Serotonin, Ach, MonoAmines and others, Excitatory Glutamate receptors ( AMPA,NMDA), inhibitory GABA, Glycine etc. .In the broader perspective all receptors are arranged in the wetware circuits to create Generative, Predictive and Recognition results. All neuronal functions have the final bottlenecks at synapse …which are gated by receptors.

Synapse receptor families

The real acknowledgement of these tiny molecular protein receptors would be understand that the whole megapolis superstructure of this life processes can be accessed only thru these vanguards…and no other option exists.
